Fall 2006 News

Thanks to Bennington Elementary School Librarian, Karen Brostad, we are up to date on AcceleratedReader (AR) tests available at Bennington Public Schools. Look for books on our shelves with the blue ARstickers or check for AR titles on our online catalog.

With today’s Internet cluttered with information, how do you select reliable sources?
Bennington Public Library, in partnership with the Nebraska Library Commission, offers a wealth of information through the NebraskAccess program. These resources provide all Nebraskans with free online access to thousands of current full-text magazine, journal, and newspaper articles; up-to-date business information; biographical information; and much more. Try it out today! Drop by the library or try NebraskAccess on the web.

There are always new titles to “check out” at the Bennington Public Library.
Our collection includes all of the 2006-07 Golden Sower award winners and all but a few of the 2007-08. Both our children and adult fiction sections are constantly growing with new titles, including, of course, the latest best-selling authors, many of them on CD or cassette. Come see what we have to offer. If we don’t have what you want, we will be happy to do our best to get it for you through Interlibrary Loan.

Plans for a new library facility are in the works.
Many thanks to those who participated in one of two community forums held October 10 with library planning consultant George Lawson. Members of the community were asked to provide input regarding their ideas and vision for the future of the Bennington Public Library. The library staff and board are working with George Lawson to develop a comprehensive and detailed plan for a new library facility. Your comments and suggestions on how we can better serve you are welcome anytime. Please feel free to email library director Lisa Flaxbeard.

Community Support is vital to the Bennington Public Library.

  • Our Summer Reading Program was a success because of the generosity of sponsors and volunteers.
  • Friends of the Library worked tirelessly on the car raffle to benefit the building fund and the Bennington Daze Book Sale. The book sale raised $650 and the raffle, despite being cancelled due to insufficient ticket sales to cover the cost of the prize, raised nearly $8,000 in donations.
  • American Legion Post 266 generously donated $500 to the City to assist in the purchase of a new library sign.
  • The Bennington Days Committee designated a generous $4,000 donation to the Friends of the Library.
  • The number of book donors is too numerous to list. Thank you for your donations and support.

Keep them coming! Donated books and other materials are always gratefully received. Materials not added to our collection directly support the library by becoming part of the Friends of the Library’s annual book sale.

It is with deep regret that the Friends of the Library and the Bennington Woman’s Club announce the cancellation the 2006 Festival of Trees. Three weeks after the deadline (September 15) only 14 trees were committed to the event, which is less than half the normal display. Plans are to try again in 2007.

Leola Bonge, who served as director of the Bennington Public Library for the past 18 years, retired this summer. Many members of the community expressed their gratitude and best wishes at a retirement open house held in her honor July 10. Though she’s retired, you may not miss Leola completely; in addition to the numerous community activities she is involved with, you may still see Leola at the library occasionally as she steps in as substitute librarian when needed. Thank you, Leola, for your years of service!
